Frequently Asked Questions

We know families often have questions before enrolling. Here are answers to some of the most common questions about Legacy Heights Academy.

About the Program

What is Legacy Heights Academy?

Legacy Heights Academy is an online academic program offering complete, TEKS-aligned science courses and hands-on science workshops for students in grades 5–10. We serve students preparing for Credit by Exam, homeschool students who need structured, teacher-led instruction, and advanced learners who are ready to move beyond grade-level content.

What makes LHA different from tutoring?

Tutoring has its place - but Legacy Heights is designed differently.  Our courses and workshops are led by credentialed, experienced educators who know the content, know the standards, and know how a classroom functions. We deliver the comprehensive curriculum for each grade level in a 16-week time frame.  Our goal is to make sure students genuinely understand the material and are prepared for what comes next.

Who teaches the courses?

All Legacy Heights courses and workshops are led by certified science educators with master’s-level degrees in their content area or in education, along with extensive middle and high school classroom experience. Our instructors are experienced teachers who understand the content deeply and know how to teach it in ways that are clear, engaging, and effective.

Credit by Exam

What is Credit by Exam?

Credit by Exam is a district-administered test that allows students to demonstrate mastery of a subject and earn full course credit without completing the class. In Texas, CBE is managed at the district level - meaning policies, testing windows, eligible subjects, and registration deadlines vary by district.

Is CBE right for my student?

Not every student is a good fit for CBE, and we would never recommend it without first understanding your student's academic background, goals, and readiness. That is exactly what our consultation is for, to help families make an informed decision before committing to anything.

Does every Texas district offer CBE?

No.  While many Texas school districts offer Credit by Examination, availability, eligible subjects, testing windows, and registration procedures vary by district. Some districts offer CBE broadly, while others have more limited options.

During your consultation, we review your district’s current CBE policies with you so you understand what is available and what steps to take next.

How do I find out about my district's CBE policies?

The best first step is to contact your student's school counselor or district's curriculum office directly. You can also bring this question to your Legacy Heights consultation - we will help you navigate the process and make sure you have the information you need.

What platform do you use for courses?

All Legacy Heights courses are delivered live online through Zoom. Course materials, assignments, and weekly content are organized and delivered through Google Classroom - giving students and parents a structured, accessible hub for everything related to the course.

What happens if my student misses a class?

We understand that life happens.  Course materials will be available in Google Classroom, and students will have access to the recorded session so they can review what they missed and stay on track. Details on our makeup and recording policy are covered during parent orientation before the first class.

Homeschool Students

Can homeschool students enroll in Legacy Academics courses?

Absolutely. Legacy Academics courses are designed for homeschool students who need structured, teacher-led science instruction. Our courses follow a clear weekly schedule and cover the full scope of Texas TEKS - giving homeschool families a complete, credible course from start to finish.

Does completing a Legacy Academics course count toward homeschool requirements?

We recommend confirming specific requirements with your homeschool program or umbrella school. Our courses are taught by credentialed educators and fully aligned to Texas TEKS, which satisfies many homeschool documentation needs. We are happy to provide course details and instructor credentials upon request.

Legacy Labs is the hands-on learning division of Legacy Heights Academy. We offer monthly in-person science workshops for students in grades 5–10 throughout the Greater Houston area - where students investigate, experiment, analyze, and apply science in ways that go beyond the traditional classroom.

Who can attend Legacy Labs workshops?

Legacy Labs workshops are open to students in grades 5–10. We offer separate experiences for middle school and high school students so every session is age-appropriate and academically relevant.

Where are workshops held?

Workshops are held at locations throughout the Greater Houston area. Specific locations are shared with registered participants before each event.

Are there workshops outside of Houston?

Beginning in 2027, Legacy Heights Academy will begin bringing STEAM pop-up experiences to cities across Texas approximately once every three months. Join our email list to be the first to know when a pop-up is coming to your area.

Does my student have to be enrolled in Legacy Academics to attend Legacy Labs?

No. Legacy Labs workshops are open to eligible students whether or not they are enrolled in a Legacy Academics course. Families can register for workshops independently based on the student’s grade level, interests, and workshop availability.

Getting Started

How do I enroll?

Start by completing our interest form. Once we receive it, we will reach out within 48 hours to schedule a consultation. After your consultation, we will confirm the right course or workshop for your student and walk you through the registration process.

Is there a consultation before enrollment?

Yes. Before any student enrolls, we schedule a one-on-one consultation with a Legacy Heights advisor. This gives us the opportunity to understand your student's goals and academic background, review any relevant CBE policies if applicable, and make sure our program is genuinely the right fit before you commit to anything.

What does the parent orientation cover?

After registration and payment are complete, all families are invited to a parent orientation before the first class. Orientation covers a meet and greet with the instructor, a review of the course curriculum and expectations, and a walkthrough of the tech setup so your student is ready from day one.

How do I register for a Legacy Labs workshop?

Workshop registration links are posted to the Legacy Labs page as each event is announced. Spots are limited and fill quickly - we recommend registering as soon as registration opens.

Still Have Questions?
